H.E. Hamza Abdi Barre

H.E. Hamza Abdi Barre is the nominated 21st Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, appointed on 14 June 2022 by HE President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Barre is also an MP of the House of the People of the 11th Parliament of the Federal Republic of Somalia. He was elected on 28 December 2021 in Kismayo, the interim capital of the Jubaland State of Somalia.

PM Hamza Abdi Barre holds an MBA in Management from the International Islamic University of Malaysia (2009) and a BA with a major in Management from the University of Science and Technology in Yemen (2001).

The new PM has previously served the nation in different capacities. He served as the chairperson of the Jubaland Independent Boundaries and Electoral Commission (2019-2020); a senior advisor to the Ministry of Constitutional Affairs of the Federal Government (2015-2019), and as a senior managerial affairs advisor to the then Mayor of Mogadishu (2014-2015). PM Barre also served as the former Secretary-General of the Peace and Development Party (PDP; 2011-2017, now Union for Peace and Development Party – UPD), whose party leader is the current President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, HE Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

The PM has devoted his time to improving the community, particularly the education sector. He is the co-founder of Kismayo University, where he served as the Deputy Rector-cum-Director of Academic Affairs. The PM also worked as the Deputy General Registrar and Senior Lecturer at Mogadishu University.

Among his other critical contributions to the education sector in Somalia was his role as the Secretary-General of the Formal Private Education Network in Somalia (FPENS; 2003-2004), which assuaged the need for education in the absence of the services of the central government that collapsed during the civil war. Mr. Barre is also a scholar, researcher, and academician who worked in various research institutes, including the Al-Shahid Center for Research and Media Studies (Somalia) and the CPS, the International Islamic University (Malaysia).
