H.E. Mr. Abshir Omar Jama – Huruse

The Minister of Foreign Affairs is the second highest position in terms of the order of precedence of the executive branch.

The current foreign minister is Abshir Omar Jama, the 31st person to hold this position since its establishment in 1960.

His Excellency Abshir Omar Jama was appointed as Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation by H.E. Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre among the members of his new Cabinet on August 2, 2022.

The Cabinet was approved by an overwhelming majority by the House of People of the Federal Parliament of Somalia on August 7.

His Excellency Abshir Omar officially assumed his duties from his predecessor in a solemn ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building in the capital, Mogadishu, on August 13.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation is an academic with successful political and commercial precedents at the local and regional levels.

His Excellency’s responsibilities include setting, developing and implementing national strategies, plans and policies aimed at strengthening the foreign policy of the Federal Republic of Somalia. He has many other responsibilities in national security, water security, border and international disputes, investment and international trade.
